Fun Tradition: Use Ornaments as Tags on your Gifts

Written by Lisa. Posted in Christmas, Gifts, Lisa's Family, Traditions

Growing up my Mom had her box of “doo dads” as she called them, that she used as the tags on our presents each year.

They may not be the most fancy wrapping but they bring back such fond memories! She used all sorts of ornaments and had special ones that even had our names on them. Her Mom, my Grandma Gloria, had also done this on her presents.

I use the ones she had for my boys on their presents for her 12 years of Christmas gifts. This year when all the ornaments go on sale I plan on finding some I can add my boys names onto so I can continue this tradition in our family. As a special surprise in her box I found all sorts of cards that we had given her over the years. Most of them from when we were younger. It was fun to see the ones she had kept. It’s a clever idea to put them in the box she used for wrapping because then she could see them each year when she was wrapping presents. I can see her now sitting and reading them and getting a little weepy while she wrapped presents. She was always so full of such great and small ways to remember and carry on sentimental traditions.

How to Make a Live Christmas Wreath

Written by Lisa. Posted in Christmas, DIY Craft, Tutorials

At our church Christmas party they had a bunch of greenery on the tables they were going to be throwing away. I couldn’t stand the thought of it so I gathered a bunch up and brought it home to make us a fresh and amazing smelling wreath. Having a Wire Wreath Frame How to Make a Live Christmas Wreathwould make it so much easier but I was cheap and used the white grapevine one I had on hand.

I used Green Covered Floral Wire How to Make a Live Christmas Wreath to secure it to the frame and before starting I used pruning shears to cut the big branches into equal sized smaller bunches. To start, grab a small bunch.

Wire it to the frame.

Then take another bunch and secure it above that one so that it overlaps and covers the stems and wire of the last bunch.

Keep doing that until you have gone all the way around. Because I used my grapevine wreath I had to add some on the sides. If you use a normal wire frame this is not an issue.photo 5 How to Make a Live Christmas Wreath

Then you should have something that looks like this.

Last step is to take your clippers and trim it up so that it doesn’t have weird branches sticking out all over and also use leftover branches to fill holes and make it even.  I used a ribbon to hang mine on the back of our front door and its been making our house smell dreamy ever since!

Grandma’s Christmas Tradition

Written by Pam. Posted in Books, Christmas

GrandmaLogo Grandmas Christmas Tradition

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite traditions that my Mother does!  For the last 10 years every December she has given us kids (and our families) a new Christmas Book.  The book is something that would generally be one that we would want to sit down with our families and read each Christmas Season!  Books that have a meaningful story – something that will touch our hearts!

I actually keep these books in my entertainment center year around!  I don’t necessarily read them anytime – pretty much just during the Christmas Season.  But, I do find myself noticing them while dusting or something and it makes me smile!  Reading is one of my Mother’s passions!  And, although I don’t find myself being able to read as much as I would like to, I know that it is something that has been instilled inside me and that I want to pass onto my children as well.  I want my boys to have a passion for reading like my Mother!

I thought I would list the books that she has given to us over the last 10 years, so that if this was a tradition you would like started in your family, you would have a great starting point!

Christmas Oranges

Silent Night, Holy Night

A Night Without Darkness

The Creation

Bunny Christmas

The Last Straw

The Miracle of the Wooden Shoes

I Heart the Bells on Christmas Day

Christmas with the Prophets

The Christmas Train

Enjoy and have a great week everybody!

Turn Free Printables into Ornaments + a Round up of Free Chalkboard Printables!

Written by Lisa. Posted in Christmas, Gifts, Tutorials

I am loving all of the chalkboard printables out there! For the PTA board this year we wanted to give them something for Christmas as a Thank you and I decided to make them ornaments using the chalkboard printables.

I downloaded them, shrunk them, and then consolidated them onto 1 page. Then I printed them, cut them out, and inked the edges.

I found cute paper that was double sided so there would be a cute design on the back of the ornament  too. Then I used scrapbook stickies to adhere the chalkboard printables to the cute paper.

I cut them out leaving an even border around them.

Then I re-inked the edges again.  I also printed out little PTA 2012-2013 tags, cut, and inked them too.

This is what the back looked like after I put the PTA tag on the back.

Next I used my eyelet kit to punch a hole in the top.

I was super excited at this point – they were turning out so cute!

To finish them off I used raffia to make a bow and a loop to hang them with. I cut a piece about a foot and half long.

Then I folded it over and pushed both ends though the back towards the front.

Then I tied it into a bow!DSC 0769 Turn Free Printables into Ornaments + a Round up of Free Chalkboard Printables!

Here are where I found all of the free awesome Chalkboard printables:

5 Free Chalkboard Prints from Nest of Posies

Chalkboard Printables from Love, Pomegranate House

Cup of Cheer

Oh Holy Night

Tis the Season to be Jolly

Oh Come let us Adore Him

Santa Clause is Coming to town

You could use these for so many things! As tags on gifts, to decorate your own tree, or as gifts for a super cheap price. I only spent $6 on this whole project and it made almost 30 ornaments!
