Fathers Day/Golf Buffet Tags

Written by Lisa. Posted in Father's Day, Free Printables, Holidays, Holidays

This last weekend we headed to CA for a celebration of life for my husbands Grandfather,  John Henderson. He was an amazing man and it was such a treat to get together with all so many people who loved him.  To make the menu (which was delish!) easy for the guests I made tags for all of the food choices. The banana split  bar was the kids favorite of course!

Grandpa was a major golf enthusiast so the tags have a masculine golf feel to them! You can download the tags as a blank file or with the golf embellishments.

Check out some of these other cute ideas they came up with! They used his golf cart as the ice station! They also filled one of his golf bags with a trash bag and a bunch of ice and used it as a cooler for the drinks!

Summer Printable

I decided to hurry and make a simple Summer Board for the top of my entertainment center, before baby Dylan comes. I needed something to fill the space this summer, because my focus for sure won’t be on keeping my home decor rotating and changing!

As I have in the past, I’ll be sharing a printable version with you. Be sure to check out my Fall Subway Board, Halloween Subway Board, Christmas Subway Board and Winter Board for other printables for your home!

With my to-do list still pages long, I kept this one pretty simple. I just painted a simple white coat first, then put on a green coat and topped it with a greenish yellow paint (I think it was called Appletini). On call the layers, I did really random brush strokes. Changing my direction all the time and not worrying about covering the board perfect. Then I applied the reverse vinyl and painted the lettering a blue color. Before letting the lettering dry all the way, I removed the vinyl. And, that was it! Pretty quick and easy!

Parenting Takes Courage

Written by Lisa. Posted in Free Printables, Kids, Lisa's Family, Motherhood, Parenting

Last Friday Night I was blessed to have a heart to heart about parenting with some amazing women- Pam, Jessica from Pretty Providence, Kelly from Dixie Dollar Deals, and Heidi from One Creative Mommy. We spent a lot of time talking about how social norms are making it hard to be a parent. Sometimes doing the right thing for your kids can be judged as harsh and cruel. We all loved this article from Living Well Spending Less, but you can tell from her disclaimer at the bottom that she has received some really negative backlash. I was surprised when I had received some negative comments on my Object lesson in Honesty post.

I feel sorry for this next generation of children growing up.  It seems that our generation as parents are terrified of depriving our children of anything or allowing them to feel any disappointment whatsoever. I look back at my childhood and recognize that the hard times I went through made me such a better person, a stronger person. My husband says the same thing. The trials we went through prepared us to handle disappointment and the monotony that sometimes life has to offer. I wish life could always be fair and kind to our children but the reality is – it can’t be. If they never experience any sort of disappointment until the age of 18 how in the world will they be able to handle it! Life is not fair and it’s selfish of us to teach our children that it is.

My Mom always told us she went to mean Mom school. She was strict and she made us work. Sure there were times I hated it as a child, but now I feel so blessed because I know how to work hard. I can problem solve and I’m not afraid to fail and keep trying. I once had someone tell me that they were surprised that me and my brothers did not rebel against her strict rules and hard work ethic. I finally found what I believe is the answer is in a parenting class at church. The teacher said –“Rules without a relationship will equal rebellion.” It hit me like a freight train. My Mom was strict and probably by today’s standards somewhat “abusive,” but she loved and played with us just as passionately. She was the “cool” Mom that took us toilet papering and everyone in the neighborhood played at our house and liked to be there. She was fun! For me that has become the key and the model I am trying to follow. I am strict, but I am also a whole lot of fun!

I have added my own little part to the saying:

Don’t be afraid to be a good parent and break some of the scary directions parenting is taking us right now. It’s okay to say NO to children. It’s okay to make them work. Just remember it’s just as important to love and praise them!

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know this, being a parent is hard. I don’t love some of the changes I have seen in parenting norms. I am breaking a lot of them by being mean, making my kids work, holding them responsible for their their choices, and heaven forbid correcting them when they are wrong. I want strong and resilient boys, not boys who can’t handle the challenge of life. I have experienced criticism for it at times, but hey I’m strong! At least I can handle the haters! And for that I thank my mean Mom!

Summer Fun Calendar

Written by Pam. Posted in Free Printables, Kids, Summer

SummerFunButton Summer Fun Calendar

How about a Summer Fun Calendar to go with the Summer Chore Charts?  I am not 100% sure I’m going to use this on a weekly basis, but for sure on our slower weeks!  Being that my boys are just 3 and 5, if they are needing some motivation to keep up on their Summer chores, then I’ll use this as a motivator!  We’ll complete it each week and if they both do their daily chores, then we’ll get to do the next days activity!

I went ahead with 3 different  11×8.5″ designs for this!  I’ve compiled the list of ideas from our posts listed below, as well as my Childrens Activities and Crafts Pinterest Board!  I am offering each design with the bottom “ideas” section blank, so if you prefer, you can complete that yourself.

I’ll be laminating my Calendar and hanging it on my fridge and then using a dry erase marker to complete it each week!

Summer Chore Charts

Written by Pam. Posted in Chores, Free Printables, Household, Kids, Organization, Summer

button2 Summer Chore Charts

Nathan has outgrown my Pre-K Chore Charts over the last year, so I decided to make him a new Summer Chore Chart to use this summer.  If this system works for him, then I’ll adapt it into a long term Chore System later in the summer that can be used all the time!

I’ve heard it’s a first born thing, but Nathan really likes to be involved and doing what I’m doing.  Sometimes too much!  He is pretty much capable of getting ready for the day and doings most things by himself, but the problem is he doesn’t WANT to do it by himself.  He wants everything to be a family activity!  haha icon smile Summer Chore Charts  He’ll be 5 in a few months and come this Fall he’ll be starting morning Kindergarten and Jeffrey will be in morning preschool a couple days a week.  I need Nathan to be able to just get himself all ready and his room picked up in the morning by himself, cause I’m going to have a baby and a preschooler to be getting fed and ready in the morning too!  So, that is what I am going to have him focus on  this summer – morning independence!

I do plan on starting Jeffrey on the Pre-K Chore Charts this summer as well!  He isn’t as naturally obedient as my Nathan was, but he is a lot more independent.  I’m starting this whole “chore” idea on him later then I did with Nathan, but now that he is 3 I’m thinking we can expect some good results from him!  Hopefully, we’ll have a great summer of helping my boys create good habits of helping around the house!

I created 6 design choices for you all!  I am offering the file as a PDF’s or JPG’s completed and blank. You can totally use the ones that I designed for Nathan or you can import the blank files into an editing program and customize it for your child.  If you don’t have an editing program, then you can go to http://www.aviary.com/ and edit them there.  It’s a really great and FREE site!

The font I have used for my chore titles is LDJ Eccentric.  You can download it HERE for $3.  I actually got it from Lettering Delights one day when they were offering it for a limited time Free!  Be sure to read THIS post on how to Use and Install Fonts if you don’t have experience with downloading fonts off the web.

Now for the design choices and download links!
