Kids Art Display

Written by Lisa. Posted in Home Decor, Kids Activities, Lisa's Family, Organization, School, Tips and Tricks

We are still in CA playing and having a good time! It’s so fun to get the cousins together! But while we are away I thought I would share with you how we display our kids artwork when we are home.

Are you all as overwhelmed with the amount of art and papers kids can produce as I am!?! I have an ongoing internal battle between showing off their masterpieces and building their confidence, and my dislike for clutter! So, I came up with a clothesline in their playroom that they display all their art on.

I stole the saying from my good friend Tyece! They know that they can switch up their art as often as they like. About every month or so I completely take everything down and we start fresh.

Pallet Flag

Written by Lisa. Posted in 4th of July, DIY Craft, Patriotic, Tutorials

Just in time for the 4th of July, Lori from You’ve been Framed and I finally made the big pallet flags we have been talking about making forever!

DSC 0505 Pallet Flag

First we split some pallets to get some good rustic wood. Who am I kidding, first John ripped the pallets apart for us so we could have the wood! I wasn’t quite sure of the length so until we started painting I left them full sized.

Next we measured out how wide we wanted our blue section to be and sectioned it off on the top 3 boards. We did ours 13 inches wide.

Then we painted the wood. Red stripe on the top, alternating with white down the boards, and blue in the corner.

Then we cut the boards to the right size, we cut ours to 38 inches. Using her Silhouette, Lori made stars for our blue section. We were so excited to finish them up that we forgot to take pictures of that part! But what we did was pull the center part of the stars out, so we were left with a stencil of 9 stars. We placed that on the blue section and then painted white into the inside of the star stencil.

Next we sanded each of the boards really good to give them the really nice distressed look.

I loved how the boards all sanded a little differently.

Then we sprayed them with a clear polyurethane. I hung mine on my porch. This is the first of many porch projects that I plan on doing this summer. I really want to spruce my porch up!

Lori already has a darling porch and she propped hers up with some of her other cute stuff.

They are super fun for the summer!

Map Wall Art

Written by Lisa. Posted in DIY Craft, Home Decor, Tutorials

When we  bought our first house we had an actual office! I was so excited to have an office and not have to cram the computer into our bedroom!  I wanted to fill it with decor that was super classy. I especially wanted a big map on the big wall but I didn’t want it to be  boring. This is what I came up with.

mapwallart1 Map Wall Art

This was literally the first big home decor project I ever did and I still love it almost 7 years later! It was super easy and cost me about $60 to do. First I found my map. I looked long and hard because I wanted a beautiful map, and I found one by National Geographic Map Wall Art for about $20 at that time.

Next I found frames I liked. I bought mine at Walmart for about $3 a piece, so the total cost for the frames was just under $30. The only problem with buying your own map is that it doesn’t fit the frames perfectly. My frames were 11×14 but the map was only 30 inches tall. To compensate for that I added a piece of frame matting on the top and bottom to make it fit. Michael’s was great about cutting it to the exact dimensions I wanted and it was only about $10 if I am remembering correctly.

I though the mat would look weird but I actually really like the way it helps frame it out.

To cut my map correctly I started by finding the middle of the map. Then I measured 5 1/2 inches on each side of the center point. This way I knew my center piece would fit the middle frames, and the top and bottom pieces would be the same size. I did that on both sides of the map and then connected the measuring lines with a yard stick and cut it carefully into thirds.

As far as the width went my map was too large. It was 46″ wide and my frames were only 42″ wide. I started the same way. I measured to the middle and then measured 7 inches off of each side and cut it. That way my middle section was exactly 14 inches wide and perfectly centered. Next I measure 14 inches from the edge of the side pieces and cut the extra off the ends. It was about 2 inches on each side.  I did this for all 3 strips and was left with my 9 pieces. You cant really tell the sides were cropped unless you know they were.

I used scrap booking sticky tabs to attach the map the cardboard insert of the frame. Once I had my map pieces mounted, I went to Michael’s to have my mat cut to finish it off. This is one project where you want to measure twice and then double check with your glass to make sure your marks are lining up correctly before you cut.

One day I will have a library/office with cherry wood bookshelves, over-sized leather chairs, and lots of maps and globes! For now I love my wall map!

A few changes around here…

Written by Lisa. Posted in DIY Craft, Home Decor, Lisa's Family, Tutorials

I was so inspired by this picture from Gail’s Decorative Touch.

I love how she used the background wood to ground her shelf. I wanted to make something similar for the top of my Entertainment center. Here it is before….

And now after…

housedecor1 A few changes around here...

It was super easy! Here is how we did it using some scrap wood we had on hand.

  1. First measure the total width of area you want the fence to be. Then measure the width of your individual  boards and then divide the numbers. The space I wanted my boards to be was about 46 inches. My boards were 6 inches wide each, so I did 8 boards so the total width would be 48 inches.
  2. Next I measured the boards to the height I wanted them to be. Then hubs cut them for me.
  3. Next I placed another board across the cut boards and measured the horizontal beam just a little bit longer on each side. Hubs also cut these for me.
  4. I lined my boards up against our house so they were lined up right and pushed against a straight surface. Then I placed the horizontal beam across the vertical beams and using screws I screwed the long plank into each vertical board. I did this for both the top beam and the bottom beam.
  5. Once it was all together I washed the wood well and let it dry completely.
  6. Then it was as simple as painting the wood. First I sprayed it black. I didn’t do a perfect job since I wanted it to look pretty rustic. Then I tried to spray it white. Note to self – NEVER use a light colored spray paint on reclaimed/rough wood like this. It just soaked it up. I used a brush and some craft paint to get a good solid white. I then sprayed it with my fav Heirloom White A few changes around here.... Lastly I attacked it with our hand sander. You simply can not get the same distressed look with sandpaper that you can get with a hand sander A few changes around here.... They are so worth the money!
  7. Hang and enjoy!!!

Another small change in our home came when my boys gave me a gift card to Home Goods for Mothers Day – Sa-weet! We needed a clock in our bathroom in the worst way and the one on our collage wall was perfect. So I found a new clock for our collage wall.

And now…

I’m super happy with the results. These two little things really have changed the feel in our great room. Now for a more dramatic change – the kitchen and I have a date with color. These are the colors I am thinking about. Any thoughts?

I want a color that is neutral and classic, but not boring. Stay tuned! I AM NOT looking forward to taping all my cupboards off! It was so much easier to paint when there were no cupboards and appliances!

Gathering Basket

Written by Lisa. Posted in DIY Craft, Gardening, Home Decor, Organization, Summer, Tips and Tricks

I’m so happy it’s Friday!!! Today I want to share with you one of my new favorite things around our house!

gatheringbasket5 Gathering Basket

Last year when I would go out to my garden in the morning, I would always have to send one of my boys back in to get me a bowl for collecting what I had picked. I usually figured I could carry it, but it never worked very well! I tried a wicker basket, but it got messed up pretty fast. I knew I wanted some sort of gathering basket that could sit by my door that I could grab each day. I love this one from RunnerDuck Resources.

Time has just not allowed me to make one. As I was browsing our local thrift store I saw this basket and knew with a simple makeover it would be perfect.

gatheringbasket6 Gathering Basket

First I painted it black.

gatheringbasket1 Gathering Basket

Then I gave it a couple of coats of Heirloom White .

gatheringbasket2 Gathering Basket

I can’t find this color in stores anymore, so I order it off Amazon because it is the perfect color. It’s white – but not stark white. The Ivory colors are too yellowish for me. Heirloom White is the perfect shade for every single project!

Then I did some distressing.

gatheringbasket3 Gathering Basket

After  I had it the way I wanted it, I gave it a coat of Polyurethane Gathering Basketsince it would be getting dirty and would have to be wiped and washed out occasionally. I made sure the polyurethane was a satin finish so it didn’t take on a lot of sheen. It sits by my back door and anytime I head to the garden I just grab my basket. It’s been so convenient!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
