What do we do in the Summertime Jar Updated for 2013!

Written by Lisa. Posted in Free Printables, Kids, Kids Activities, Summer, Traditions

Each Summer I create a “What do we do in the Summertime” jar with fun ideas for the boys and I. I started this tradition because I use to feel like the whole summer passed us by before we knew it and before we had done any of the fun things I was planning.

summertime copy 432x575 What do we do in the Summertime Jar Updated for 2013!

My goal is that the items on the list are not too hard or too difficult that we don’t get them done. We try to draw three or four a week depending on how involved they are. A few of them are repeats because they were big hits or we didn’t get to them last year. I have included our new list here with links to the ideas if they have a tutorial or printable that goes along with them. I also offer it as a printable so you can print the list off and create your own jar. All you have to do is cut the list into strips and then add them to a jar. You can take the ideas off that don’t fit your family and add in your own ideas.

A Camping Treat!

Written by Lisa. Posted in Camping, Dessert, Kids Activities, Recipes

We headed out of town this weekend on a two day camping trip and it was just what I needed to get away and have fun with my family without any distractions! My hubs lamented before going that we couldn’t take ice cream with us because we couldn’t keep it cold long enough. I don’t like to disappoint so I decided to try to baggie ice cream at the campground. It was a hit and so easy to do!

What you need:

  • Half and Half (we used a little whipping cream too because we wanted it extra creamy)
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • gallon Ziploc baggies
  • quart Ziploc baggies
  • Ice
  • Rock salt

For each serving you need 1 cup of  half and half, 2 Tbsp. sugar, and 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Just dump it into a quart bag and seal up. We did about 3/4 cup half and half and 1/4  cup whipping cream. The whipping cream made it really smooth and creamy. Do not use all whipping cream though because it kind of whips up and doesn’t freeze as well.

Fill a gallon Ziploc bag a little less than half way up with ice and then add 1/2 cup rock salt and the quart baggie with the ice cream ingredients. Then shake it!

It took about 5 minutes of shaking to get it to a really good thick consistency. Even our 4 year old could do it!

It was yummy! So yummy in fact that since we were only about 15 minutes from a store we had to head back the next day to get more ingredients to do again! We added strawberries the next day to the bags to make strawberry ice cream. There are so many possibilities – like adding hot cocoa, raspberries, Oreos…Be prepared for happy and messy children!

Trust me this makes for very happy campers! Although it was funny to watch them trying to get the last drops and catching a little taste of the salt on the outside of the bag! This is a new must do for our camping trips!
