Every summer we go on a little family vacation with my immeidate family! Because there are so many of us (11 adults / 14 kids), we generally just rent a house somewhere fun and then plan some activities around that area. One of our families favorite snacks is Gorp. I was introduced to this recipe from my friend, Jaesi (Heart Strings Attached) and now one of my family members always makes bags and bags of this for our trip!
This would be an awesome treat for birthday parties, family parties, movie parties, playdates, school parties, Christmas neighbor gifts – really anything! If you haven’t tried this, then it’s a must!
Also, one thing I want to note is that I have had several people after trying my Torp tell me that they had had something similar to this that didn’t have the M&M’s. Every single one of them said it is 10x better w/ the M&M’s. That little bit of chocolate adds a ton!
So, here we go:
I like to start by mixing all my dry ingredients together first. That way while I have stuff on the stove I don’t have to be running around measuring out several items and worrying about the stove.
Mix together your Chex, Golden Grahams, Slivered Almonds, Shredded Coconut and whatever else you decided to add in the LARGEST bowl you have!
After you dry ingredients are mixed combine the butter, sugar and Karo syrup in a good sized pot on the stove. Bring to a boil and let boil for 3 minutes. Then turn to medium heat and add in the Vanilla. You want to make sure the sugar has all melted too! After you ensure that all your wet ingredients are melted together, pour over your dry mixture and coat everything evenly!
Then lay out a big piece of Wax paper and spread the mixture over the wax paper to allow it to dry. Store in a large container or large Ziplocks.
Here is the recipe:
3 cubes butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups Karo syrup
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 large box Chex (rice or corn)
1 large box Golden Grahams
2 cups slivered almonds
2 cups shredded coconut
and whatever else you desire!
Mix cereals, almonds, and coconut in large bowl. In a pot melt together sugar, butter, and Karo. Bring to boil and cook for 3 minutes. Add vanilla. Pour over cereal mixture and stir until all coated. Spread on wax paper to allow for it to dry. Store long term in a container or large Ziplock bags.
Super easy, right?!? It makes a ton – so be prepared to share with friends and family! Enjoy!
