Written by Lisa. Posted in Baby, Tips and Tricks, Tutorials

Pam happened to mention that she didn’t have a whole lot of fun headbands and bows for Dylan and so I wanted to spoil the little miss with some head bling. After dropping some serious $$$ on some from a boutique, my amazing friend, Carly, told me the secret to her daughters darling bead bands – Stretchy Ribbon DIY Baby Headbands for Super Cheap!! We can get it at our local Ace Hardware in St George and our Joanne’s Fabric carries some too.

Seriously how cute are these headbands?

They are so cute and they can be worn plain or you can put a flower or bow on them!

There are so many ribbons that I had a hard time deciding – luckily with the price being so good, I didn’t have to decide!

DSC 0003 thumb DIY Baby Headbands for Super Cheap!

All I had to do was cut the ribbon to the right size and then put a small dollop of hot glue on the end of the ribbon and stick the other edge on.

It’s that easy!

Here is a general idea of sizing for baby headbands:

Newborn (12 inches)
3-6 Months (13 inches)
6-12 Months (14 inches)
12-18 Months (15 inches)
18-24 Months (16 inches)
3 Years (17 inches)
4-5 Years (17 inches)
6 Year-Adult (18 inches)

And just one more picture of Carly’s darling baby who seriously melts my heart and was an excellent model!

Make a Screen for Your AC Unit

Written by Lisa. Posted in DIY Craft, Gardening, Home Decor, Renovation and Re-do, Tutorials

I am so proud of myself! This is my first start to finish project that I have made all by myself.

ac screen thumb Make a Screen for Your AC Unit

I came up with the design by myself, cut all the wood, and did almost all of the labor by myself. I had to call the big guns in to do some of the hammering! It was a whim of a project last Saturday. We had a bunch of wood that my husband was going to cut up for firewood and I was sick of staring at the big hunk of metal that is our AC unit. It threw off the look of the garden and I really wanted to hide it.

Untitled 1 thumb1 Make a Screen for Your AC Unit

First I measured how tall I wanted it to be and cut three boards that length to be my upright posts. Then I measured how wide I wanted the front to be and started cutting A LOT of boards that length. I planned it so there was a good foot between my screen and the AC until because I didn’t want to cut down on the efficiency. I also only did two sides to mine so that there could still be a lot of air flow. Essentially I made an “L” shape.

Next I built the front. I placed my two upright posts and then laid the top and bottom piece over them. I left an inch and half overhang so when I nailed my other side in the corner it would be flush.

After getting the top and bottom piece nailed in, I cut more boards and spaced them evenly between the top and bottom. I didn’t hammer any of these in until I got all the boards in the right place and made sure the spacing would work out. Then I hammered them in.

The next side was where I needed to bring the big guns in. I had to hammer at a more awkward angle so the nails needed to go in faster and quicker so I had my hubs help me. I also got distracted and forgot to take picture of these steps – sorry! Essentially I hammered the the 2×4’s in the space I had left for them on the front. Then I laid it on its side and we hammered the last upright piece in to all those loose ends.

The last step was to attach this awesome hose holder I found at our local thrift store for $1  to the side of the wood. I’ve been waiting for my hubs to attach it to the stucco and I am much happier having it on the wood than the actual house.

It’s a much nicer view from the kitchen table!

Only a couple more projects to get to in the yard (at least that’s what I tell myself!) Even though everyone says you can plant on April 15th here in So. Utah I always wait until the last weekend because of the all the Spring winds we get. I got impatient and planted on Monday and we have had nothing but whipping winds since. Grrr! We are almost done with the landscaping and I could not be happier! It been 5 loooong years!

From Oops to Ahhh!

Written by Lisa. Posted in DIY Craft, Gardening, Home Decor, Tutorials

We have a day in our house that we don’t talk about very much. John was helping me while I was in CA taking care of my Mom by running my Grandma Irene’s teacups and saucers to an event. Well, he was busy working and being a full time dad to Caleb and he was rushing and put the tray with all the teacups on the toolbox of his truck.  You can imagine what happened…he then backed out with them still there! Yes, it was a big and mighty crash! I was devastated…but not more than John was. I really loved those teacups!  John still feels sick when he thinks about what happened. At the time, I couldn’t bear to throw them away, so I just tucked them away thinking that at one time I would come up with some sort of project for them…and now I have!

We are just finishing our backyard landscaping and I am planting myself a perennial garden. I wanted to make stepping stones to put in around the flowers and her  teacups were perfect. Here is how I did it – First I separated the china into big pieces, good flat pieces, and tiny little pieces.

Next I mixed the garden stone cement and got it nice and smooth in the tray.

garden stone2 thumb From Oops to Ahhh!

I then started laying the pieces. I started with bigger pieces on the edge to make a nice edge and then added some big pieces in the middle.

garden stone5 thumb From Oops to Ahhh!

Just push the pieces down with nice even pressure until it sinks into the cement. Sometimes I needed pieces to fit but didn’t have anything, so I took a bigger piece and wrapped it in a thick towel and then hit it with a hammer until it cracked as big as I wanted it.

Sometimes the water from the cement would come to the top and get in the way of being able to put the little pieces in. When it got that way I just placed a paper towel over the top and let it soak up the water.

I am super happy with how they tuned out! I especially love the teacup handles in them!

garden stone8 thumb From Oops to Ahhh!

Can’t wait until there are flowers everywhere to grow in around them. I would not recommend making these actual stepping stones since the teacup pieces are not perfectly flat and I would not want anyone to get cut on them. I love having these in my garden and now a big oops is a big ahhh!

Potting Time!

Written by Lisa. Posted in Free Printables, Gardening, Household, Tutorials

I love to garden. I have dreams of having a  lush English rose type of garden. There is only one problem – I live in the middle of the freaking desert! I have been hanging onto an old headboard and footboard with hopes of turning it into a potting bench and I finally did it!

button thumb Potting Time!

I had great pictures of how we did this step by step but they somehow disappeared into the depths of my computer wlEmoticon sadsmile Potting Time!  It wasn’t that hard though. All my hubs did was put  a couple supporting pieces on each piece where we wanted the shelves and then cross beams to place the shelves onto. You can see it from the side of the bench here.

DSC 0093 thumb Potting Time!

DSC 0066 thumb Potting Time!

I attached an old rake head to the side to store my tools on.

DSC 0082 thumb Potting Time!

And then in the middle I stenciled this awesome saying! (At the bottom of this post you can download it as a Chalkboard printable.)

DSC 0084 thumb Potting Time!

It turned out even better than I imagined!

DSC 0087 thumb Potting Time!

DSC 0104 thumb Potting Time!

I have big plans for planting some ivy in a pot so that it can grow on the shed. Here is how I painted it. First I sanded the old white paint off.

potting bench1 thumb Potting Time!

I wasn’t super picky about getting all the paint off since shabby chic was the look I was going for.

potting bench3 thumb Potting Time!

These are my painting super stars. Rust-Oleum Espresso Potting Time! and Rust-Oleum Heirloom White .

potting bench4 thumb Potting Time!

First I painted the edges in the espresso.

potting bench6 thumb Potting Time!

You don’t have to be super exact. In fact I left my hubs a little message on the back because he was coming in later than I was!

potting bench5 thumb Potting Time!

Once I had my initial edges painted I got out my soap. Yep, my other favorite painting tool! This cuts off tons of work sanding later on!

potting bench8 thumb Potting Time!

I rubbed the soap all along the edges where I wanted the brown to show through.

potting bench10 thumb Potting Time!

potting bench9 thumb Potting Time!

Then I painted the whole thing with heirloom white. After I let it dry for about a hour I went in with the sandpaper and scraper and took off the paint to show the brown through. If you use soap you barely have to rub the sandpaper or a scraper over it and the white comes off really easy!

potting bench12 thumb Potting Time!

I love this saying so much so I created a quick chalkboard print that you can download.

Life began in a garden chalkboard thumb Potting Time!

You know you have a bit of a gardening obsession when your husband says, “It must be spring, I keep finding dirt all over the house and tools.” I cant help myself I love to work in the yard and find such peace and satisfaction in growing things!

Organizing the jammie drawer!

Written by Lisa. Posted in Organization, Tutorials

I am a little OCD – I like the tops and bottoms of my kids jammies to match. The problem is they are boys and they don’t care what they wear! My Mom solved this by showing me this great way to fold jammies together so that they stay put in sets.

Jammies before and after thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

Its super easy to do too! Here is how you do it.

DSC 0700 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

First I fold the bottoms. I lay them out, fold in half, and then fold in half again.

step 1 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

With the top I fold it in half and lay it down, arms out.

DSC 0705 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

Lay the bottoms at the top of the shirt.

DSC 0707 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

Then you fold the top up over the pants, cross the arm over, flip it over, and tuck it in.

jammies 3 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

Then you have a nice little tucked set of jammies. They can drop them on the way to put them away and they are still nice and held together.

DSC 0716 thumb Organizing the jammie drawer!

That was a really long explanation and I  promise the process of doing it is WAY easier! Now my boys are always in matching jammies and their drawer doesn’t give me a headache to look at icon smile Organizing the jammie drawer!
